Film Elements, Narrative, and Characters Blog Post

The genres in this show are: crime drama, gangster, and superhero. The genre crime drama most of the time explores the background and story of the antagonist to try to get the audience to understand the antagonists motives and why they do what they do, which they spend nearly a whole episode to get the viewer to understand the Penguin’s actions by focusing mainly on how he grew up. There is genre hybridity, and it is successful, as the show has a rating of 9.7. Hybridity attracts different audiences because you don’t have to like superheroes to enjoy watching this show. The expectations of this show were very high as the movie this spinoff comes from, “The Batman”, was considered one of if not the best batman movie.
The premise of the plot is entwined with the story of the Batman movie. One of the main characters, Victor Aguilar, is affected by an event that occurred in the movie. This was when the riddler and his followers blew up parts of Gotham which caused the city to be flooded, which resulted in him losing his family. The main theme of the story could be “Don’t trust anyone”. The narrative is led by conflict and it happens often in this show.
A lot of characters fit the mould. However, there is not necessarily a hero in the story because they have all done bad things. The Penguin resembles the villain, except there is no hero to thwart or kill in the show. Victor Aguilar is the one who signifies a change in society from a social and cultural perspective, as he changes from just a kid who tried to steal one of the penguins tires on his car, to an accomplice and the one who was the closest to becoming his friend.
